Why we charge what we charge

Subscriptions are how we stay independent.

We're ad-free. We don't sell your data. We don't take money from the brands we recommend in exchange for ranking them higher — every product in the GSS Approved Store is ranked by its regenerative alignment first.

Subscriptions, plus a small commission on affiliate purchases you choose to make, are how we keep the lights on while staying aligned with you instead of the advertisers.

Where part of your subscription goes

A portion of every subscription funds church community gardens.

A meaningful percentage of every Grower and Steward subscription goes into the GSS Church Garden Fund — startup grants, seed stock, raised-bed materials, and on-site coaching for churches that want to grow real food for their local community.

Hungry neighbors fed, congregations connected to the land they steward, and one more living example of soil-first food in every town that wants one. Your subscription helps build those gardens.

Frequently asked

The honest answers, in plain English.

What does “founding member” actually mean?

If you join during our launch window (first 6 months after public launch), your price is locked for the life of your active subscription. If we ever raise prices later, your rate stays the same. Cancel and rejoin later, you pay the current rate.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. One click from the billing page. Cancellations take effect at the end of the current billing period, so you keep access until the period you've already paid for ends. No prorated refunds, no “reason for cancelling” forms.

What if I want a refund?

If something is genuinely broken or didn't work for you, email hello@goodsoilsociety.com within 30 days of your first charge and we'll refund it. No essay required.

Do I need both the app and a paid tier?

The Seedling tier (free) gives you Conversational Mode, the Find a Producer directory, and 5 Sower questions a day. That's enough for a lot of households. Paid tiers unlock more daily questions and the deeper garden- and farm-scale planning modes as they launch.

Why subscription instead of one-time?

Because we're not done building. The AI knowledge vault gets better every month. The product database grows every week. New tools land seasonally. A subscription is honest about the fact that this is a living tool, not a finished product you bought.

Why charge at all? Aren't there free gardening apps?

There are, and many of them are great. The reason we charge is so we can stay ad-free, stay honest about which products we recommend, and stay independent of advertisers whose interests don't align with regenerative growing. A small subscription is how we keep the lights on without having to sell your attention.

Is the Steward tier available now?

Steward opens when the app launches, alongside the other tiers. Signing up during the founding window locks your rate ($19/mo) for the life of the subscription. Steward is built for homesteaders and small producers: unlimited everyday Sower questions, every Sower mode including the farm-scale tools, and the deeper planning modes — the Soil Test Interpreter and the Rotation Planner — reserved for Steward as they ship. ("Unlimited for everyday use" means a generous fair-use ceiling on the heavy planning tools that keeps the AI sustainable — normal use never comes close to it.)

What's actually different between Grower and Steward?

Grower gives you 15 Sower questions per day and the garden-scale modes as they launch (Garden Planner, Garden Studio). Steward adds unlimited everyday questions plus the farm-scale tools — the Soil Test Interpreter and the multi-year Rotation Planner ship to Steward as they're built. Steward gets more valuable over time as those modes land.
